Alright, so I have gotten mildly addicted to the show, Shameless.  I know it’s been out for a while but I’m usually too busy to watch TV.  And I also prefer to binge watch shows when they come out on Netflix.

For those of you who don’t know, Shameless is about dysfunctional family, and the a man named Frank, who is a single father to 6 children.  He is also a drunk who is never home.  So the children essentially have to learn to take care of themselves.

This show is jam packed with humor, controversy and betrayal.

If you’re anything like me, you sometimes enjoy grotesque humor but there are some scenes in this show that made me cringe or get utterly embarrassed for the actors, and that is damn near impossible for me!

I have talked with a few people that have said that “finally, a show where it presents a real family.”  I’m not so sure about that statement, but these scenarios are drastic!  I guess that’s why the title is so perfect!!!

Have you watched the show? What’s your favorite episode/scene?  What other shows do you like?

Hey Skin, We Need to Talk…

(Update as of 09/09/2016: I have started using Rodan and Fields Unblemish and am currently on week 3 and will keep you posted on the results!)

The Struggle

So, I’m in my late 20’s and I’m struggling with mild adult acne…well sometimes mild. I don’t get it. I literally can’t control my skin. I have used so many different products, as well as changing my diet.  I wash my face daily and I always make sure to take my makeup off before bed or before/after the gym. I also try to go as long as possible without putting any makeup on.

Stop That

My skin wasn’t this bad when I was a teenager. It’s so unnerving. I remember it being such a big deal in High School. “Oh my gosh, I hope no one stares at my giant pimple!” or “there’s no way I’m going to school today with this thing on my face!”  I remember those days…

It doesn’t bother me as bad as it use to or so I thought (I guess I wouldn’t be writing this if it didn’t)….It just keeps getting worse. I’ve been to a dermatologist and lost all hope once my face got scarred from the doc. So I gave up.

The List

Here is the list of products I’ve tried:

  • Dermatologist (prescription meds)
  • Neutrogena
  • Clean and Clear
  • Aveeno
  • Dermalogica*
  • Proactiv
  • Boots No. 12
  • Ulta Face Line
  • Mac Face line
  • Philosophy
  • Clinque
  • Murad

So…here is the short list.  The only real results I’ve had was dermalogica but on the flip side of that, I swear my skin gets use to products…anyway, that lasted a few months.

So here I am reaching out to this wonderful community! Any suggestions? Prayers? Haha! What has or hasn’t worked for you?

My Top 5 Favorite Southern Sayings

When I first moved to the midwest, I tried real hard to cover my accent up.  I felt like people were constantly making fun of me and it was super annoying having people correct me ALL.THE.TIME.  So, eventually I embraced it…and now, I’m me! So with that, I LOVE my Southern Sayings. And here are my TOP 5! I use these daily, well when relevant and they are just so damn cute!

“The porch light’s on, but no one’s home!”

  1. “Hey Ya’ll!” -This is completely obvious! It’s a greeting!
  2. “We are living in high cotton, darling!” -This means we are living good!
  3. “Buggy” -This means a shopping cart.  “Grab a buggy!”
  4. “The porch light’s on, but no one’s home.” – We use this when referring to stupidity.
  5. “Bless it.” or “Bless your heart.” -Now this has multiple meanings.  It could be sympathetic or could mean we think you’re stupid.

Do you have a favorite saying?!

Trying New Things

As easily as I get scared, I am always up to try new and adventurous things.  Let me backtrack here, I am terrified of heights…like terrified. I don’t know exactly what happens to my body once I am up high, but my brain sends out this warning to the rest of my body and it locks up and I’m frozen.  Moving forward…

Dominican Republic

On my last trip to the Dominican Republic, I went zip-lining through the rain forest. I was thinking to myself “YES, I’m adventurous and a total badass. I got this.” But once I was in my harness and leaning over the edge in a tower swaying above some of the tallest trees in the rain forest, I started to second guess my decision. At that point, I’m thinking, “well this is dumb.”  I started to back away from the edge and was not going to do it.

“My fear of missing a once in a life time opportunity outweighed my fear of heights.”

Decision Time

Then I had some running commentary in my head, “Really?!?! Are you going to be a chicken and back out?! Seriously?!”  I stopped thinking completely and just did it.  I flew through that bad boy! Zooming through trees, feet touching water and birds just flying all around me! Best decision I have ever made.  My fear of missing a once in a life time opportunity outweighed my fear of heights.

Now, when I’m faced with a decision that terrifies me, I look back on this time. I just said to myself “screw it.” And do it.  I was so worried that I was going to look back and say that I wish I would have at least tried it. Since then, I have tried everything, well almost everything, that I come across.  Whether it’s food, excursions, or events.  I have said, “YES!” And I am happier then I have ever been and I also have amazing stories to tell! Next time you are in a situation where you are facing one of your fears, just say “F -IT!” You’ll regret that you didn’t!

I will also try to find my zip-lining pics for you guys! Stay tuned!

When we were young…

When I was young(er), I wanted to be a veterinarian. That was my dream! I LOVED and still love animals. I use to bring home injured animals and I would treat them. My mom use to get pissed! LOL!!

Me being a vet, wasn’t completely far fetch but after a horrific accident that left me bleeding out, I realized that I couldn’t stand the sight of blood. Yuck! I passed out several times during the accident…quite embarrassing.

After the incident, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do…then I became very interested in crime scene investigations. So, I began doing research about what I wanted to do. Did I want to be a criminal profiler? Did I want to be in forensics?  There were so many things. I was also probably in my late teens and was stressing so much about this life decision.

I researched the FBI and the CIA! But very quickly realized that it wasn’t for me! At the point when I was in college, I still was trying to find my place.

I actually didn’t know what I wanted to do until my 2nd full-time job in the actual workforce.  It was an event coordinating and marketing gig. I loved it so much! I actually enjoyed going to work and staying late. It never got old! I still love it till this day.

The funniest part about it all was that I didn’t actually know what I wanted to do until I was 25 and, like I said at my 2nd full time job in the real world.  It’s amazing where life takes us! And sometimes I still wish that I could find that little girl down deep and tell her “don’t stress out trying to figure out what you want to do with your life, your time will come!”

I still silently chant this to myself every day!

What did you want to be when you were younger? Or are you still searching? Let’s hear it?!

My Momma Does it Better!

Chicken and Tea

Let me tell you about one of the stereotypes for us southerns, that is actually true.  We like our tea sweet and our chicken fried. Now, I don’t eat like this all the time, because it’s not that healthy and it’s so difficult to find the combo up in the midwest, well it’s actually rare.

So this brings me to my momma’s fried chicken and sweet tea recipe! WOOHOO! When I first called her a few years ago getting the recipe, she made a statement saying that “my fried chicken is good honey, but I made my best when I was your age.” I laughed and said “momma, age is not an ingredient.”  She said “you’ll see one day.”   Well I haven’t quite seen it yet but there’s still time!

My Momma’s Fried Chicken

2 1/2 Cups of all-purpose flour

1 Teaspoon of salt and pepper

1/2 Teaspoon of poultry seasoning

1/2 Teaspoon of cajun seasoning ( I prefer Slap Ya Mama original blend of cajun seasoning  Link here Slap Ya Mama

2 Eggs, beaten

1 1/2 cup of milk (2% or whole)

1 Whole Chicken (2 to 3 lbs.) (I prefer white meat chicken)

1 Quart of vegetable oil for frying

  1. In 1 bowl; mix flour, salt, pepper, poultry seasoning, and cajun seasoning. In the other bowl, beat eggs, and then mix milk in with the eggs.
  2. Heat up oil in frying pan to about 325-350 degrees, (F).
  3. Dip each piece of chicken into the milk/egg mix then into the dry mix.  Repeat with the dry mix 1 more time. Make sure the dry mix is coated thick on the chicken before keeping it into the oil.
  4. After chicken is prepped, deep each piece into the oil for about 12-16 minutes or until brown.  Make it as crispy as you want!!
  5. ENJOY!

Now my dad makes the best sweet tea so here you go!

My Dad’s Sweet Tea!

3 Bags of Lipton Tea Bags ( I just have always used lipton tea bags.  you can use whatever you like)

2-3 Cups of Sugar

1 Gallon of Water

1 Tea Pitcher

  1. Boil a medium pot of water. Once the water is boiling, add the 3 teabags to the boiling water.  Let the teabags seep for a minute and then turn the temperature down to low.  Let that sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Grab your tea picture and add your sugar.  Pour the water and tea mix into the pitcher and stir until the sugar dissolved. Do not add the tea bags into the pitcher.
  3. pour hot water into the medium pot over the tea bags and add that seeped water and tea to the pitcher.  Repeat this step a few times until pitch is almost full.
  4. After tea pitcher is full, stir well and place pitcher in the fridge for about an hour (longer if you can)(Throw away the tea bags)!

And P.S. You will not need any lemon or other additives unless you want something a little extra! Just serve over ice and enjoy!

So hopefully you enjoy these recipes as much as I do!  Feel free to ask questions or tweak it however you like! It does take some getting use to!
